Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Contributes to the New York Disaster Relief Effort through the American Red Cross

CHEROKEE, NC - On September 12, 2001, during a routine working session of Tribal Council, discussions concerning the traumatic events of the previous day replaced the regular agenda for a time. As with all Americans everywhere, members of the Eastern Band were, and still are in disbelief that this hideous act of terrorism could be committed against the strongest nation in the world.

At the request of Chairman McCoy, a sum of $10,000 was approved by the Council to be donated the American Red Cross in their efforts to aid the countless victims whose lives will be perpetually changed as a result of the events which took place on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

Principal Chief, Leon D. Jones, who was also in attendance that day, immediately committed a monetary match from the Executive budget, bringing the sum total to $20,000.

Commenting on the donation, Chairman McCoy said, "Our Tribe believes this act to be a direct attack upon the nation of the United States of America, and we, as Native Americans are the proud descendents of the first Americans in this land, but we are also a part of these United States of America and we will proudly do our part to protect Her."

Chief Jones was quoted as saying, "On behalf of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, we are honored to be able to present this contribution as a means of assistance for the innocent victims of the senseless acts of terrorism perpetrated upon the citizens of the United States. Please know that all of the people whose lives have been ever affected and forever changed by this hideous act of violence, have our most heart-felt and sincere sympathy. And even though we realize that this is only a small contribution in relation to the overwhelming need, the members of the Eastern Band are honored to be able to assist in any manner which we are able. Our thoughts and prayers will be with these people in the months of recovery to come."

The Executive Office also donated 54 cases of Cherokee Bottled Water, half-liter bottles (1296 bottles) and Cherokee Bottled Water donated 50 cases of 1.5 liter bottles (600 bottles). Both donations went to the Hearts with Hands who was collecting in conjunction with the Red Cross.
