Founded in 1944 in response to termination and assimilation policies that the United States forced upon the tribal governments in contradiction of their treaty rights and status as sovereigns, the NCAI mission is to work in unity with Indian tribes for the protection of tribal sovereignty and treaty rights and to promote the welfare of Indian people. NCAI represents 250 member tribes from throughout the United States and serves as the major national tribal government organization, monitoring federal policy and coordinating efforts to inform federal decisions that affect tribal government interests.
