The Cherokee Nation is accepting nominations for the bi-annual Cancer Summit Service Awards, which honor individuals and organizations that have made contributions in promoting cancer control throughout the Cherokee Nation.

“These awards are a way for us to recognize and acknowledge those who have devoted their time to serve the community and promote cancer control in our communities,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.

The awards are divided into categories and focus on different aspects of cancer control, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, survivorship and quality of life, and surveillance.

The Outstanding Individual Award recognizes a person who has demonstrated commitment to health in prevention, outreach and awareness based on compassion and a cooperative attitude in finding ways to improve the health of our communities and individuals. The nominee can be an individual from inside or outside the Cherokee Nation who provides services, education, or volunteers in outreach.

The Cherokee Nation Gadugi Award is presented to a Cherokee Nation employee, department or program (outside the Cherokee Nation Cancer Program) that has made significant contributions by working for quality of life for this and future generations.

The Cherokee Nation Outstanding Organization Award is given to a group for their service in preventing cancer and who promotes the development of rural health.

The Distinguished Spirit of Life Award is presented to a cancer survivor for their encouragement in fighting cancer and their dedication to promote public awareness in prevention and early detection using personal experience.

Nominations will be accepted through Friday, January 15, 2010, and winners will be announced at the Cancer Summit Awards Luncheon on Thursday, March 4, 2010 in Tulsa.
