The Cherokee Nation will be offering Cherokee language classes in
several area communities within the tribe’s 14-county jurisdictional
area this fall.
Cherokee Nation’s Cultural Resource Center is sponsoring the free
10-week community language classes, which begin in October and run
through December. The class schedule is as follows:
In Muskogee County, language classes will be held at the Porum Senior
Citizens Center beginning Thursday, October 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.,
and running for ten consecutive Thursdays. The instructor will be
Dorothy Powell.
In Rogers County, classes will be held at the Cherokee Nation Claremore
Housing Services Office beginning Monday, October 5, from 6:30 p.m. to
8:30 p.m., and running for ten consecutive Mondays. Meda Nix will be the
instructor.
Language classes for Sequoyah County will be held at the Marble City
School starting Tuesday, October 13, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Classes
will run for ten consecutive Tuesdays. Instructor is George Byrd.
Classes in Adair County will start on Monday, October 12, at the Indian
Capital Technology Center in Stilwell from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and
will continue for ten consecutive Mondays. Marie Eubanks will instruct
the class.
In Washington County, classes will be held at the Dewey Adult Learning
Center in Bartlesville beginning Monday, October 12, from 6:30 p.m. to
8:30 p.m. Classes will run for ten consecutive Mondays. Instructor is
Bill Foster.
Tahlequah classes taught by J.C. Lowe will be held in the Osiyo Training
Room on ten consecutive Thursday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.,
beginning on Oct. 8. The Osiyo Training Room is located behind the
Cherokee Nation Gift Shop at the Cherokee Nation tribal complex on Hwy
62 South.
The Cherokee Nation Cultural Resource Center provides services and
information that works to revitalize Cherokee language and heritage. The
language course is a part of the Cherokee Nation’s culture and history
initiative that will help to preserve the Cherokee language.
Classes are beginner level and are open to anyone with an interest in
learning the Cherokee language. Classes will include an introduction to
the Cherokee syllabary system of writing. To register or for more
