"Sequoyah Senior Wyntre Grayson poses with her first place winning entry in the basketry division of The Five Civilized Tribes Museum art show."
TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma - There are a lot of talented students at Sequoyah Schools and now many of the school’s young artists have art awards to add to their resumes. Twelve Sequoyah Schools’ students earned awards in the annual Five Civilized Tribes Museum Student Art Show in Muskogee and fifteen earned awards in the Cherokee Nation’s Cherokee Art Competition.

“This is the best we have ever done, in these two shows; we have more students that are talented and dedicated than I have had in the past,” said Brandi Adair, Sequoyah Schools’ art teacher. “Sometimes it is the dedication to what you are doing that puts you over the top, not the talent level.”

The Five Civilizes Tribes Museum Art show winners are Roxanne Harmon, Nikki Rock, Christie Tiger, Lisan Tiger-Blair, Collin Vann, Matt Billy, Jennifer Calico, Wyntre Grayson, Tawny Gray, Shannon Orcutt, Andrianna Yahola, and Taylor Yochum. Lisan Tiger-Blair also won awards for two pieces of artwork that the judges deemed “Best of Show.”

The Cherokee Art Competition winners are Aaron Henson, Dennis Chewey, Starla Tidwell, Christie Tiger, Brendan Francis, Tara Comingdeer, Hall Sanders, Shaina Bolin, Taylor Yochum, Lindsey Hammer, Deanna Adair, Keli Gonzales, Alma Holmes, Eli Baldridge and Roxanne Harmon.

All of the art show winners received cash prizes.

Sequoyah Schools will hold a student art show and sale March 30 – April 8 in the Sequoyah Schools’ Academic Building.

“I have extended the show to accommodate the parents that will be coming in for Parent Teacher Conferences on April 8,” Adair said. “This is also the first time that the student art work will be for sale at our student show.”

For more information on the Sequoyah Schools’ student art show, contact Brandi Adair, phone: 918-453-5400 or by e-mail.

Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students, originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to care for children who were orphaned by the Civil War. Now known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. The school is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 Native American students every year. Sequoyah Schools is located five miles southwest of Tahlequah, Oklahoma. For more information call 918-453-5400 or visit the Sequoyah Schools’ web site.
