MAYES COUNTY - Cherokee Nation will host a special “Back to School” event for Cherokee
children in Mayes County and surrounding areas. The event will be held
Monday, August 3, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the OSU Extension Office located
two miles east of Pryor just off Highway 20, at 2212 Northeast 1st
Street.
The tribe’s Mayes County Pilot Project is partnering with other Mayes
County organizations and Cherokee Nation departments, to create a new
event to help parents and their children better prepare for the upcoming
school year.
“The best thing about beginning this event is bringing resources to
Mayes County residents that will promote healthy, active, and happy
families,” said Lana McClain Ed. D., Families First program manager for
Cherokee Nation. “We project that this will be an annual event.”
The back to school event will feature support and services free of
charge to Cherokee children and their families. Some of the planned
services include free haircuts, health screenings, check-ups, and
referrals to area organizations and services related to children and
learning.
Information booths at the event will provide helpful hints for parents
to learn how they can keep their children active and involved in school,
plus how to find and get involved in appropriate after-school events.
