TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma - For those who have longed for the opportunity to venture out on their own and be inventive with a new and independent business, the Cherokee Nation now has funding available to help make those dreams happen.

The tribe’s Small Business Assistance Center (SBAC) has money available in its Micro-Enterprise Development Fund to lend to tribal citizens who may be interested in establishing a small business but might not otherwise be eligible for traditional lending.

“The funds provide Native Americans the opportunity to establish themselves as entrepreneurs in our communities,” said Veronica Hix, SBAC Entrepreneur Development Manager. “The funds will help create jobs for Cherokee citizens.”

Hix says the Micro-Enterprise Development Program is a great way to obtain funding to establish a small business, adding that the loans help promote innovative thinking and will allow Cherokee citizens the opportunity to become financially self-sufficient. According to program guidelines, a Micro-enterprise is defined as a business venture having less than 5 employees, including those businesses that operate from home, garage, or other non-traditional location. Loans are limited to a maximum amount of $25,000 with re-payment terms of up to seven years. Other guidelines apply.

For more information contact Veronica Hix, by phone: 918-207-3955, send e-mail to: veronica-hix@cherokee.org or to see a complete list of guidelines visit the SBAC web site
