PARK HILL, Oklahoma – The Cherokee Heritage Center will host the 6th Annual First Families of the Cherokee Nation Reunion on August 31, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Current members and their immediate families will gather at the Ho-Chee-Nee Memorial Prayer Chapel on the Cherokee Heritage Center grounds. The reunion provides members the opportunity to learn about their Cherokee history while they enjoy a potluck dinner followed by entertainment from the Cherokee Arts and Humanities Council including animated Cherokee movies.

First Families of the Cherokee Nation is a unique organization operated by the Cherokee Heritage Center and its genealogy department, the Cherokee Family Research Center. First Families is a heraldic society sponsored by the Cherokee National Historical Society Inc. It offers lifetime membership as a means of recognizing the early families who formed the Cherokee Nation. Those interested in becoming a member will have the opportunity to learn more about this organization on the Cherokee Heritage Center grounds during the 56th Annual Cherokee National Holiday held August 29 through August 31.

Membership in First Families is limited to those who can document that their ancestor was a lawful resident of the Cherokee Nation, East or West, prior to the ratification of the Cherokee Nation Constitution on Sept. 6, 1839.
