"Council Members Meredith Frailey of Mayes County
and Cara Cowan-Watts of Rogers County are sworn in as Council Speaker and Deputy Speaker by Cherokee Nation Supreme Court Justice Darrell Dowty during the Tribal Council meeting held in Tahlequah."
TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma – The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council selected their Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Secretary during the September meeting held Monday evening in Tahlequah.

Acting under the tribe’s Constitution, sitting Speaker Meredith Frailey of Mayes County was re-elected to the Speaker position with Cara Cowan-Watts of Rogers County selected as Deputy Speaker and Don Garvin of Muskogee County chosen to serve as Secretary.

The Speaker is responsible for chairing Council meetings and be third in line of succession to the head of the government, the Principal Chief. The Deputy Speaker chairs in the absence of the Speaker, and the Secretary records and maintains the records of official Council meetings.

“This is quite an honor to serve you as Speaker,” Frailey said during the meeting. “I am humbled to be selected.”

Cowan-Watts echoed the sentiment and stated she “will work hard to support” the Council and the Cherokee people.
