TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma – The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council selected their
Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Secretary during the September meeting held
Monday evening in Tahlequah.
Acting under the tribe’s Constitution, sitting Speaker Meredith Frailey
of Mayes County was re-elected to the Speaker position with Cara
Cowan-Watts of Rogers County selected as Deputy Speaker and Don Garvin
of Muskogee County chosen to serve as Secretary.
The Speaker is responsible for chairing Council meetings and be third in
line of succession to the head of the government, the Principal Chief.
The Deputy Speaker chairs in the absence of the Speaker, and the
Secretary records and maintains the records of official Council meetings.
“This is quite an honor to serve you as Speaker,” Frailey said during
the meeting. “I am humbled to be selected.”
Cowan-Watts echoed the sentiment and stated she “will work hard to
support” the Council and the Cherokee people.
