TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma – Sequoyah Schools would like to help children with disabilities find appropriate services, as part of the Oklahoma Child Find initiative.

According to Child Find regulations, all children with disabilities, residing in the state, whether attending public or private schools, should be identified, located and evaluated. This applies to all children who are suspected of having a disability and in need of special education and related services.

“We want to make everyone aware of this service that is provided to children with disabilities free of charge,” said Shirley Webb, Sequoyah’s special needs coordinator. “We can help point them in the right direction and get them the help they need.”

Anyone who knows of a child who may be eligible for this service is encouraged to contact their local public school or Webb at Sequoyah Schools, P.O. Box 520, Tahlequah, Okla., 74465 or call (918) 453-5400. All information shared will be kept confidential.

Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students located near Tahlequah, Oklahoma, originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to take care of many orphans who came out of the Civil War. Now, it is known as Sequoyah Schools, named for Sequoyah, a scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. In November 1985, the Cherokee Nation assumed the operation of Sequoyah. It is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 students every year. For more information about Sequoyah call 918-453-5400 or visit the Sequoyah School web site.
