PARK HILL, Oklahoma – The Cherokee Heritage Center is offering a
two-day class in traditional loom weaving on Friday, Oct. 26, from 6 p.m.
to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Veronica Gaston,
a Cherokee Nation tribal citizen from Ft. Gibson, OK, will instruct the
class. Gaston has given numerous weaving demonstrations across the state
and currently works as a living historian at the Murrell Home in
Tahlequah.
Designed to provide an introduction to the nearly lost traditional techniques of Cherokee style loom weaving, the class is part of a series of cultural classes offered by the Cherokee Heritage Center. Participants will learn the history of weaving among Cherokee people, as well as other techniques such as using natural dyes. The Cherokee Heritage Center offers classes, lectures and workshops in local history, crafts, games, and native living year round to the public. Additional classes planned for fall 2007 include blowgun making, Cherokee marble making and Cherokee hunting jackets. Contact the Cherokee Heritage Center for the complete schedule. Early registration for the loom weaving class is recommended as class size is limited. The $65 fee includes tuition and materials. For more information or to register, contact the Cherokee Heritage Center’s Education Department, phone: 918-456-6007 or send e-mail to education@cherokeeheritage.org, and/or visit the CHC web site. |
