TAHLEQUAH, OK - Helping a community organization build homes
for area families, the Cherokee Nation recently contributed $15,000
to the Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity.
“It’s important to support Oklahoma organizations that help provide a
better quality of life to Cherokee citizens and our Oklahoma neighbors,”
said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “The Cherokee
Nation is proud to partner with the Habitat for Humanity to help provide
homes to families in need.”
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that seeks to eliminate
poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent
shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through volunteer labor and
donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates
simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner families. Habitat
houses are sold to the partner families at no profit and financed with
affordable loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to
build more Habitat houses.
Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor Bill John Baker of Tahlequah is proud
that the Cherokee Nation can be a part of the Habitat for Humanity
program and feels that it not only makes the tribe a better partner with
the community but is another way that the Cherokee Nation can serve its
citizens.
Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor Tina Glory-Jordan, also of Tahlequah,
agreed, and said the group was a positive thing for the community and a
positive organization to partner with. She noted that the organization
is helpful to Cherokee citizens and to Tahlequah.
“Without the contribution from Cherokee Nation this building project
would have been difficult to complete,” said Linda Cheatham, President
of Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity. “This money has come in at a
time that was particularly needful. We are very grateful to the Cherokee
Nation and want to say thank you.”
