TAHLEQUAH, OK — For the third year in a row, the Sequoyah Schools girls’
basketball team won the Oklahoma Class 3A State championship.
It started out as a close one with a tied score of 12 to 12 at the end
of the first quarter, but the Lady Indians came out of the huddle in the
second quarter ready to play and ready to win. They quickly took the
lead and never relinquished it again, winning 54 to 45 and ending a
perfect season.
The boys’ team fought hard against an experienced Oklahoma City Millwood
team, who entered the game as the defending Class 3A champions. The
Falcons returned four starters from last year’s team while no member of
the Indians’ team had played in the finals prior to the title game.
Sequoyah did, however, enter the game with a pressure defense that was
praised by opposing coaches. In the end, the Indians came away with the
silver ball, losing to Millwood 55-51 in a thriller.
The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council will recognize both teams during the
monthly meeting on Monday, March 12, at 6 p.m. at the Cherokee Nation
complex south of Tahlequah.
