PARK HILL, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Heritage Center is offering an
introductory course in the making of traditional Southeastern pottery on
Saturday, March 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cherokee ceramicist Victoria
Vazquez will instruct the class. Vazquez, an award-winning potter,
continues the tradition that she learned from her mother, Anna Bell
Mitchell, a pioneer in the revival of ancient pottery styles.
Pottery found at archaeological sites throughout the Southeast has provided a glimpse into both daily life and ceremonial practices of the region’s population prior to written history. The Southeastern pottery class offers an opportunity to practice the techniques of hand-built pottery while learning about its time-honored tradition. Early registration is recommended as class size is limited. Each student will be given the opportunity to make their own vessel. A fee of $40 includes tuition and materials. The course is one in a series of hands-on cultural classes offered by the Cherokee Heritage Center. Upcoming classes in the series include Cherokee moccasins, Cherokee masks, and stone carving. Contact the Cherokee Heritage Center for the complete schedule. To register for the class or for additional information contact the Cherokee Heritage Center’s Education Department, phone: 918-456-6007, or send an e-mail to education@cherokeeheritage.org |
