TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation will again be sponsoring the State of Sequoyah conference, which will be held in conjunction with the 2007 Cherokee National Holiday, at Northeastern State University’s NET Building in Tahlequah on Thursday and Friday, August 30 and 31.

Named after the state that Native Americans attempted to establish in Indian Territory in 1905, this year’s conference, entitled “Common Values, Common Ground: Commemorating Oklahoma History-Cherokee Nation 169 years – Statehood 100,” echoes the theme of the Cherokee National Holiday, which is expected to bring more than 100,000 visitors and Cherokees to Tahlequah this Labor Day weekend.

The conference begins on Thursday, August 30, when registration opens at 11:30 a.m. Sessions begin at 1 p.m. and will run through Friday, August 31, until 5 p.m.

Topics to be discussed are “Urban Diaspora: Twentieth Century American Indian Migration and Federal Relocation”; “Education and Relocation: Preserving the Language and Traditions of the Cherokee Family”; “Our Cherokee Language: Thriving at Oklahoma’s Statehood, Surviving at Oklahoma’s Centennial”; “Cowboys and Indians: Will Rogers’ Significance to Cherokee History”; “Cultivating Common Ground: The Value of Education”; “Experience Developing and Growing Up Within the Traditional Keetoowah Society”; and “The Carnegie Project: Research and Politics within the Cherokee Country in the 1960s.”

Scheduled presenters include Patti Jo King, Waleila Carey, Candessa Morgan, Rose Stremlau, PhD, Amy Ware, Les Hannah, PhD, Carol Cornsilk, Benny Smith, Albert Wahrhaftig, PhD, and Michael Wallis.

There is no cost to attend, however all attendees must pre-register.
