TAHLEQUAH, OK — The Cherokee Nation Emergency Management team is
coordinating efforts with county and local emergency management
officials to establish emergency shelters for those who have lost power
due to the winter storms covering the Cherokee Nation boundaries this
weekend.
Officials in Tahlequah and Cherokee County have established a shelter for individuals who have lost power in the city and county. The Cherokee County Detention Center, located at 1513 North Douglas Ave. on the Highway 51 spur is now open to receive families. American Red Cross officials are there to assist those who are affected, along with members of the Cherokee Nation and county emergency management personnel. For more information, please contact Tahlequah/Cherokee County Emergency Management at 918-456-2894. Officials in Tulsa County report that shelter has been opened at the First Baptist Church downtown at 4th and Cincinnati for area residents without power and stranded Greyhound bus travelers. In Muskogee County, there are currently three shelters that have been opened. Stranded motorists can seek shelter at Bacone College, located at the intersection of Highway 62 and the Muskogee Turnpike, and at the City of Warner Fire Station. The Muskogee Recreation Center, located at 322 Callahan, is open for those affected by power outages. Individual communities in the Cherokee Nation are also providing shelters for those without power or who are stranded due to the winter weather. Families and individuals needing shelter and assistance are encouraged to visit one of the following locations for these communities: • Eufaula – Senior Citizens Center;
