TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation is currently accepting applications
for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which is designed
to provide a one-time payment to assist applicants who meet eligibility
requirements.
“LIHEAP is available every winter to families throughout the Cherokee Nation that need help keeping their homes warm,” said Family Assistance Director Jerry Snell. “It’s good to know that the Cherokee Nation has a direct impact on keeping our elderly and disabled tribal citizens comfortable, safe and warm at home during the winter.” Each year, approximately 1,700 applicants receive assistance through the Cherokee Nation LIHEAP program. To qualify, applicants must live in the jurisdictional boundaries of the Cherokee Nation, meet national poverty level income guidelines, and the head of household must be a citizen of a federally recognized tribe. Applications must include a copy of the person’s tribal citizenship card, proof of residency (such as a utility bill) and income verification. Additionally, applicants will be asked to verify their primary heating source. LIHEAP payments are also provided by other area agencies; however, a household can only legally receive services through one agency. Applications for LIHEAP assistance will be accepted until Monday, December 31, 2007. A separate service to provide assistance with heating-related emergencies will be available January 2, 2008.
