TAHLEQUAH, OK - Football season may be over for the Sequoyah Schools
football team, but the honors that their hard work has earned keep
coming in. Head football coach Brent Scott was named Coach of the Year
for the Class 2A-8 district. Several of his players also brought home
awards.
“These guys are very deserving of these awards,” Scott said. “All of them have been in our football program for all four years and have worked very hard. I’m very proud of them and hope that we can carry on the tradition that these guys have established.” Hunter Cunningham earned the award for the Overall District Most Valuable Player, Cody Poe was named Defensive Player of the Year, Nathan Stanley won co-offensive Back of the Year and Eric Sanders was named co-linebacker of the year. In addition, eight Sequoyah players made the All-district team. They are Kemah Charcoal, Brett Littlebear, Randy July, Anthony Beaver, Eric Wofford, Jerome Koshiway, Jonah Hulbutta, and Brandon England. Seniors Nolan Pahmahmie, Eric Budder, Kolton Holmes and Kyle Marshall were Honorable Mentions. The Sequoyah football team ended their season in regional play-offs and earned the title of back-to-back district champs. Senior Nathan Stanley has been named an Offense/Defense All-American and will play in the All-American Bowl in Miami, Florida on January 4. Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students, originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to take care of children who were orphaned by the Civil War. It has since served as the Sequoyah Orphan Training School and the Sequoyah Vocational School. Now known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. In November 1985, the Cherokee Nation assumed the operation of Sequoyah. It is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 students every year.
