MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation recently presented
$5,000 to the Murrow Indian Children’s Home in Muskogee. The
contribution is part of the Cherokee Nation’s continuous effort to
better the lives and situations of Native American youth.
“The future of the Cherokee Nation lies with our children,” said Chad
Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “In order to preserve our
culture, we must protect the rights and promote the welfare of all our
young people. Through partnerships with organizations like the Murrow
Indian Children’s Home, the Cherokee Nation can help to provide
stability in the lives of children who may not have that otherwise.”
The Murrow Indian Children’s Home has been providing care to Native
American children for over 100 years. The organization prides itself on
caring for the mind, body and spirit.
Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor Don Garvin of Muskogee said the Murrow
Home is considered a home away from home for the children that live at
the facility.
“This establishment is a great lighthouse for our young Indian youth,”
Garvin said. “The staff and all the many volunteers have been able to
help thousands since the ministry was started. In the spirit of sharing
and being a good community partner, it is with great pleasure that the
Cherokee Nation helps to fund this organization in their mission to
protect the children of all of our Native American tribes,” Garvin said.
The residents of the facility come from deprived and neglected
backgrounds and are children in crisis situation. Their time at the
Murrow Home offers stability and cultural learning that is important
to their Indian heritage.
“The Murrow Home has been a part of Indian territory for many years,”
said Joan Brown, Executive Director of the Murrow Home. “We are very
happy that the Cherokee Nation provided this contribution to us. It will
make a huge impact on the lives of the children that we represent.”
