Cherokee Nation Principal Chief
Chad Smith
TULSA, OKLAHOMA – Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith will give the tribal address during the opening general assembly at the 27th annual meeting of the National Indian and Native American Employment and Training Conference (NINAETC) in Tulsa. Chief Smith will also give a tribal presentation during the opening general assembly on Monday, May 15, at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Tulsa. The opening assembly will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

One hallmark of Smith’s terms in office has been his goal of retaining and creating jobs for Cherokee citizens within the tribe’s 14-county tribal jurisdiction in northeastern Oklahoma. Smith believes that new jobs can be lifelines to families and communities, as jobs not only provide paychecks and health benefits but also enable families to become self-sufficient.

“The Cherokee Nation will continue to bring jobs to our Cherokee communities, so our people can stay home, raise families and give back to other Cherokees. A family that is self-supporting is an asset to any community, and we will continue to provide opportunities for Cherokee families to be self-supporting,” said Smith.

Cherokee Nation and its business entities currently employ approximately 6,000 people.

The NINAETC, established in 1979, is the largest and most representative national Native American employment and training association serving the needs of a broad membership that includes Native American governments, consortia and organizations. Organizers of the Tulsa meeting, which runs through May 19, expect at least 600 to 700 attendees.

The NINAETC enjoys valued partnerships with the U.S. Department of Labor, Division of Indian and Native American Programs. Among this year’s conference offerings will be several sessions on youth job readiness and retention, tribal building trades programs and creating successful self-employment and business development.

Smith will share the podium with the Cherokee Nation Color Guard, who will present the colors, and Mayor Kathy Taylor, who has been invited to give the welcoming address. Also speaking during the opening assembly will be Larry D. Ketcher, chairman of NINAETC as well as director of employment and training in Career Services at the Cherokee Nation.
