TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will host informational parent meetings for parents whose children are planning to attend one of the Cherokee Nation’s Residential Summer Fitness Camps."Parent meetings are an opportunity for parents and (Cherokee Nation) Healthy Nation staff to meet and share information. We provide information to the parents about the residential facilities such as dormitories, dining hall, educational classes and other information that parents might be concerned with or interested in," said Margie Burkhart, Cherokee Nation health educator.
The parent meeting will be held May 17 at 4 p.m. in the community room of the Cherokee Nation Complex. The camps will be held at Camp Heart O Hills in Welling, Okla., May 23-27 for fourth and fifth graders and May 31-June 4 for fifth and sixth graders. The Cherokee Nation will provide transportation to and from camps for children in outlying areas.
"Campers attend educational classes on nutrition, diabetes, tobacco use prevention and physical fitness," Burkhart said. "The campers participate in a variety of physical activities on a daily basis such as swimming, hiking, stickball, team building and cooperative games, high and low ropes courses, and dance."
Campers also have the opportunity to attend Cherokee art classes and Cherokee language classes which introduce basic Cherokee words and phrases.
