Contestants for the Miss Cherokee title are Jessica Cuenca, of Tulsa, Okla., Ashley Thirsty, of Stilwell, Okla., Ashley Proctor of Salina, Okla., LeShawna Fields of Marble City, Okla., Cassie Snell of Vinita and Lora Miller of Stilwell.
Cuenca is the 22-year-old daughter of Don and Deborah Cuenca of Owasso, Okla. She is a student at the University of Tulsa (TU) studying sociology and women’s studies. She has been a contestant in the Miss Owasso pageant for three years and is employed by Outback Steakhouse and TU Law School.
Thirsty is enrolled at Haskell Indian Nations University and is studying nursing and political science. The 18-year-old is the daughter of Adam and Emma Thirsty of Stilwell, Okla. Thirsty is a past Honoring Our People’s Existence (HOPE) princess at Sequoyah High School (SHS) and is employed by the Cherokee Nation.
Proctor is the 18-year-old daughter of Pamela Budder and Anthony Proctor. She attends Northeaster Oklahoma A&M College where she is majoring in elementary education. Proctor is a former Little Miss Cherokee and princess of her high school’s Indian club.
Fields, 18, of Marble City, is the daughter of L.S. and Treva Fields. She is studying optometry at Northeastern State University (NSU) and has earned the titles of Little Miss Cherokee, Junior Miss Cherokee and first runner-up Junior Miss Indian Oklahoma.
Snell, 19, is the daughter of Carolyn J. Moore of Vinita, Okla. She is a student at NSU studying child psychology and Native American studies. She works at the Cherokee Nation Health Clinic in Vinita.
Miller, is the 18-year-old daughter of David and Tammy Miller of Stilwell. She attends Oklahoma City University, her major is in public relations. She is a former Junior Miss Cherokee and a member of the Cherokee National Youth Choir.
The annual pageant provides a $3,000 grand prize scholarship, the first runner-up will receive a $2,000 scholarship and the second runner-up will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
A major role of Miss Cherokee is to educate the public regarding the history, culture and tradition of the Cherokee people.
The Miss Cherokee leadership competition is held every year in conjunction with the Cherokee National Holiday. The Cherokee Nation celebrates its National Holiday over Labor Day weekend, in observance of the signing of the Cherokee Nation constitution. This year’s Holiday theme, “Celebrating the Great State of Sequoyah”, commemorates Indian Territory and the state that almost was.
