TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will host a pow-wow on Saturday, April 30, to raise money to expand services for tribal elders to include field trips, Christmas gifts and holiday food baskets."The elderly are great people to work with," said Lisa James, Cherokee Nation elder services manager. "They are our link to our past and our heritage. It’s nice to try to do special things for them and take care of them."
The pow-wow will begin at 2 p.m. with gourd dancing and will break from 5-6 p.m. for dinner, resume with gourd dancing at 6 p.m. and have the grand entry at 7 p.m. There will also be a 50/50 drawing, raffles and a cake walk.
The head man dancer is Robert Soontay. Head lady dancer is Gloria Matthews. Head singer is Geoff White and the head gourd dancer is John Scruggins. Arts and crafts booth space is also available.
The pow-wow will be held at the Cherokee Nation Cultural Grounds, located behind Sequoyah High School, 4 miles south of Tahlequah on Highway 62. For more information on the pow-wow or to reserve arts and crafts booth space, call 918-456-0671 (ext.2627).
