TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will be hosting "Hike into Spring," an outdoor hike designed to get people out of the house and into exercising.

"We are constantly looking at different things for physical activity," said Lu McCraw, public health educator for the Cherokee Nation. "Everyone does runs and walks and I thought we could try something different, fun and strenuous."

McCraw, who will be the hike leader, has been an avid hiker for the past 2 years and recently hiked through the Grand Canyon.

"Remember, we begin with little steps so this hike isn’t long or difficult," McCraw said. "We’ll get there together and you’ll get a free hiking day pack."

The general public is invited to come and hike at the Overlook at Tenkiller State Park, just off of Highway 10 near the spillway, on Saturday, April 23. Registration and sign up begins at 10 a.m. and the hike will last until noon and cover approximately 2 miles.

This hike is free and open to the public. Hikers that are under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

"Come and join me and begin your own personal journey into hiking," McCraw said.

For more information, directions and to register, please call the Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation office, phone: 800-256-0671 or 918-456-0671 (ext.2260 or 2711). Registration will also be available on site.
