TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will again offer the Community Work Project to Cherokee Nation organizations permanently controlled and led by tribal members who must have their “blue” citizenship cards. Currently, funding is available to assist communities with projects such as community buildings, ballparks, playground equipment, walking trails, etc. Only community-based organizations that are administered and controlled by Cherokee Nation citizens are invited to submit proposals for community projects to be considered for funding.

“We had several communities apply for funding last year and projects that were funded are currently under way and look to be very successful. Our goal is to strengthen communities,” said Don Greenfeather, with the Cherokee Nation Community Services group. “We want to continue to enhance the community spirit and get people working together.”

Funding is limited, with projects being selected on a competitive basis by council district. Points will be awarded, for example, to the extent the projects demonstrate a community purpose, the level of citizen participation, amount of work contributions and the ability of the group to make communal decisions.

Cherokee Nation will hold a community work project technical assistance meetings in Stilwell at the Indian Capital Area Vo-Tech located 1 mile north of Stilwell on November 1, in Warner at the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation office located in Willard Stone Heights on November 2, in Tahlequah in the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council Chambers on November 2, in Vinita at the Whiteoak Community Building on November 4, in Catoosa at the Cherokee Hills Golf Course on November 1, in Locust Grove at the Cherokee Nation office located in Willard Stone Heights on November 2, in Sallisaw at the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation office on November 4, and in Dewey at the Washington County Adult Center on November 1. All meetings begin at 7 p.m.
