TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA — More than 211 elders, 128 tribal elders, recently attended a conference designed specifically to help seniors discover tribal and other resources available in their communities. Held at Sequoyah High School, the elders enjoyed a full day of workshops, vendor booths, lunch at the cafeteria and door prizes.

“Our main goal is to get service and program information into the hands of our community elders,” said Lisa James, manager of elder services for the Cherokee Nation. “Assistance is available, but sometimes it’s difficult for our elder citizens to navigate through all the tribal and community resources; we hope this conference makes it easier for them. This year’s group was fun and appreciative of the information they received.”
Organized by the Cherokee Nation Elder Service Task Force, a total of 211 elders, staff and resource vendors enjoyed the day. Informational workshops included medication management, restricted property, living wills, diabetes education, senior fitness, how to live longer and Cherokee History. Plus, more than 20 vendor booths provided valuable information about services and programs available to elders.
