TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation adopted the U.S. Army’s 45th Infantry Division during the Tribal Council meeting July 12. The 45th Infantry Division has traditionally had a large number of Cherokees, dating back to W.W. II.

“It’s an honor to present this resolution,” said an emotional Jackie Bob Martin, who represents Adair County on the Tribal Council. “When we look at the veterans and sacrifices they have made through the years... I never saw my father. He died in W.W. II, on a prisoner of war march. He was part of the fighting 45th, and Patton called them one of the best, if not the best division in the history of American army.”

The resolution passed unanimously.

The Council also honored a Cherokee veteran from Claremore, Jerre Sunday, and a Cherokee Nation Marshal, Jon Ketcher, who is serving in Iraq but is home on leave.

The Council also unanimously passed an act allowing limited liability corporations to be formed under Cherokee Nation law.

“This will provide an environment for business development,” said Meredith Frailey, who represents Mayes County on the Tribal Council.

In other action, the Council unanimously passed resolutions authorizing a $5 million line of credit for the Cherokee Nation, and establishing financial depositories for the Nation. The Council also passed a budget amendment that added more than $5 million to the Cherokee Nation’s annual budget.

The Council passed several resolutions approving applications for grants, including three approving to combat obesity and diabetes and two for environmental issues.

The Council also voted to offer free automobile tags to permanently disabled Cherokee Nation citizens who are eligible to register their vehicles with the Cherokee Nation.

In a 12-2 vote, the Council streamlined the way the Principal Chief appoints members to various Cherokee Nation boards and commissions. Those appointments will still need Council approval

The entire July 12 Cherokee Nation Tribal Council meeting can be viewed on the Cherokee Nation’s web site.

The next Cherokee Nation Tribal Council meeting is scheduled for August 16 at 6 p.m. in the Tribal Council Chambers at the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex on Highway 62 south of Tahlequah.
