TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation honored retiring Tahlequah Mayor Jerry Cook with a dinner in his honor Monday night.

“Jerry Cook has done tremendous things for Tahlequah and the Cherokee Nation,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “He has helped bring the city, the Cherokee Nation and Northeastern together as partners for the community.”

Smith cited Cook’s role in bringing major technology investments from Southwestern Bell as one of the keys to jumpstarting the local economy.

“With the technological infrastructure in place, Tahlequah is now a very attractive destination for businesses looking for a new home,” Smith said. “This investment has already paid off in jobs for Tahlequah, and the future looks bright.”

Smith also praised Cook for his vision for the community.

“Jerry saw that Cherokee Capitol Square could become an icon for Tahlequah,” Smith said. “The Cherokee Walk of History, and the engraved bricks around the square, were his idea. People now come to Tahlequah from all over to see their names in Cherokee history.”

Cook praised Smith and the Cherokee Nation for their efforts to improve the community as well, and stressed the importance of the Cherokee concept of ‘ga-du-gi’, communities working together.

“No matter who fills the mayor’s chair, it is vital for the City of Tahlequah to continue our good working relationship with the Cherokee Nation,” Cook said.
