TAHLEQUAH, OK - Native American students from kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to participate in the third annual Cultural Immersion Day Camp sponsored by the Cherokee Nation June 9 through July 18 at Sequoyah High School campus in Tahlequah. The $20 per week fee for the camp includes breakfast, lunch and a snack, and is a very affordable opportunity for parents who want to expose their children to various aspects of Cherokee language, history and art according to Cherokee Nation Cultural Resource Center Director Dr. Gloria Sly."Our intention is not to profit from this event, but to provide an educational experience that is also fun", Sly said.
The camp will be conducted Monday through Friday for six weeks and requires parents to provide daily transportation. Participants must abide by rules of conduct and are eligible based on membership in any federally recognized Indian tribe or through Certified Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB).
Traditional games such as marbles and stickball will be offered together with crafts such as basket weaving and making cornhusk dolls.
Deadline for camp registration is April 18th. For registration and other information, contact Denise Rooster at the Cherokee Nation Cultural Resource Center, by phone: 918-458-6170; or by e-mail.
