SHS Teams Head to State Basketball Tournament

TAHLEQUAH, OK - Sequoyah High School, an all-Indian school operated by the Cherokee Nation, will send both it’s boys and girls basketball teams to the state tournament this week. The Sequoyah girls team is making the trip for the third year in a row and the Sequoyah boys team is making their second trip in four years.

The Sequoyah boys will play Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City against Eufaula. The Sequoyah girls will play Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at Southern Nazarene University against Savanna.

The fairgrounds are at the intersection of I-40 and I-44 in Oklahoma City.

Directions to Southern Nazarene University: Take I-44 from Tulsa to OKC. Stay on I-44 through to the west side of OKC. Exit in NW 39th Expressway. Stay on 39th past Macarthur. School will be on the north side of the road, between Macarthur and Rockwell.

Directions to Southern Nazarene from I-40: take the Macarthur exit. Go North to NW 39th Expressway and turn left (west). School will be on you right (north side of 39th).

Sequoyah High School, an Indian boarding school, originated in 1871, when the Cherokee National Council passed an act setting up an orphan asylum to take care of many orphans that came out of the Civil War.

Sequoyah High School's approximate 300 enrollment represents 42 tribes and 14 different states. Students are eligible to attend if they are members of federally recognized Indian tribes or one-fourth blood descendants of such members.
