Wilma Mankiller Reads to Cherokee Kids

Former Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, OK, Wilma Mankiller, seated.
TAHLEQUAH, OK - Former Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller visited the Cherokee Nation Early Childhood Unit (ECU) Tahlequah Child Development Center recently to read to the children of the pre-school, kindergarten and after school classrooms. She read the book "How Turtle’s Back Was Cracked" by Gayle Ross, illustrated by Murv Jacob.

Chief Mankiller also showed the children Cherokee baskets and told how the baskets are made and what they are made of.

The reading was a part of the Read Aloud Project of ECU.
