TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation (HACN) Family Investment Center recently completed it’s first Kid’s Computer Camp. The idea for the HACN to hold a Kid's Computer Camp to provide an introduction to computers for its younger residents began at a Pumpkin Hollow Resident Organization community meeting.
The camp consisted of one day of computer training for several HACN resident children ages 8-18. The Kid’s Computer Camp utilized the Family Investment Center (FIC) computer classroom.
"I wanted to show the kids that a computer is not just used for games", said the camp instructor, Steve Edwards, who teaches the HACN Computer Literacy Class for HACN residents. "Basically I teach them about what a computer is, explain some of the basic points, and then let them explore the Internet for career and school information. We introduced the little kids to learning sites such as learn.com and pbskids.org
"It was cool", said camper Krystal Zarate. "At first it was boring and then it was really fun", said camper Marissa Hambleton, Pumpkin Hollow Resident Organization .
Participants were: Megan Ummerteskee, Marissa Hambleton, Shannon Reese, Kenlee Stopp, Rocky Gritts, Jeremy Sixkiller and Krystal Zarate.
