TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation Vocational Rehabilitation Program was recently approved for another five years of funding by the U.S. Department of Education.The funding will provide culturally relevant vocational rehabilitation services to Native Americans with disabilities residing within the Cherokee Nation’s 14-county jurisdictional area. The program assists people with a broad spectrum of disabilities including mental disorders, arthritis, asthma, learning disorders, heart conditions, visual impairments and diabetes.
Services offered include assistance for training at colleges, universities and vocational schools; physical restoration services; and on-the-job-training. Specialized services such as job-search training, resume writing, interview techniques and other specialized programs also are available.
The new funding period began Oct. 1 and will continue through Sept. 30, 2005.
The Cherokee Nation Vocational Rehabilitation Program first received funding in 1992 and has been providing services to Native Americans with disabilities since Oct. 1 of that year. It was one of the first vocational rehabilitation programs established in Oklahoma. It is only one of eight tribal programs in the state.
