The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma wishes to announce that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has assistance available to Indian tribes for housing (i.e. rehabilitation or private residences), community facilities (i.e., infrastructure, including water lines, sanitation facilities, gas lines, and building, including community buildings, head start buildings, fire stations, etc.), and economic development projects.

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is eligible for up to a total of $750,000 for one or more eligible projects. The Nation would compete for funding with other Indian tribes in this region. The deadline for applications to HUD for tribes is May 24, 2000.

Recipient of services must meet income requirements and be Indians. Projects must be specifically identified to be eligible for funding. For example, all houses would need to be identified if a housing rehabilitation project was included in an application or specific water lines would need to be proposed for a community facility water infrastructure project was submitted.

In Fiscal year 1998, Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma received funding from HUD to build three new food distribution sites in Salina, Sallisaw and Stilwell.

THE CHEROKEE NATION OF OKLAHOMA IS INVITING RESIDENTS OF THE 14-COUNTY JURISDICTIONAL AREA TO COMMENT ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING NEEDS AT 6:00 P.M. IN THE TRIBAL SERVICES CONFERENCE ROOM OF THE CHEROKEE NATION ON MAY 15, 2000
