TAHLEQUAH, OK — The Cherokee Nation is currently in the process of submitting a proposal to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) grant.A draft of the 2001 fiscal year LIHEAP proposal is available for public review. During this review process, the public is encouraged to submit either written or verbal comments regarding the development of the final draft of the tribe’s LIHEAP plan. The LIHEAP program helps the Cherokee Nation distribute air conditioners to elderly and medically disabled Native Americans during the summer months to families who meet LIHEAP eligibility guidelines and have a current doctor’s statement that acknowledges a medical condition that requires refrigerated air.
Copies of the draft plan will be available in the Family Assistance Department at the Tribal Complex and in all field office sites. Comments will be accepted August 21 - 23, 2000. Persons unable to review the application may request information by calling the Cherokee Nation (918) 456-0671, extension 2327. Comments will be accepted over the telephone.
