As you may have heard, Cherokees do not have a word that says "Good bye". Cherokees us several different phrases to close a conversation. Here are some examples: Till we meet again (you and I) Big Cove Giduwa dialect De-na-da-go-hv-hv Formal De-n-da-go-hv-hv Conversational Till we meet again (you and I) Giduwa dialect De-na-da-go-hv-yu Formal De-n-da-go-hv-yu Conversational Till we meet again (you and I) Oklahoma dialect Do-na-da-go-hv-i Formal De-n-da-go-hv-i Conversational I will see you. (Said to one person) Hi-gv-go-v-hi (Hi-gv-go-v-hi) is a phrase that I use often because you can specify when you will see the person. Here are some examples: I will see you tomorrow. Su-na-le hi-gv-go-v-hi Tomorrow I will see you. I will see you later or after awhile. Go-hi-di hi-gv-go-v-hi Later I will see you. I will see you Saturday. U-n-do-da-gwi-de-na hi-gv-go-v-hi Saturday I will see you. To the students of the Cherokee Language: In my last lesson I might have led you in the wrong direction. I told you that (hlesdi) meant "not" in the Western dialect, in actuality it translates to "quit". I want to say to all the members (s-gi-do-li-gi) "forgive me".
